WESTERN BEAVER SPECIAL EDUCATION
Q: WHAT IF I FEEL MY CHILD WITH AN IEP HAS REGRESSED OR IS NOT MAKING PROGRESS DUE TO THE SCHOOL CLOSURE?
A: The district is responsible for reviewing how the closure has impacted the delivery of special education and related services to students eligible for special education services. Once school resumes, a child's IEP team must make an individualized determination whether, and to what extent, compensatory services or future services may be needed, consistent with applicable requirements, including to make up for any skills that may have been lost during the closure within a reasonable timeframe. All students will be progress monitored upon return to the physical school building to determine regression.
Q: WHAT IF I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY CHILD RETURNING TO THE SCHOOL BUILDING DUE TO MEDICAL OR OTHER CONCERNS?
A: Your child can continue to participate in a distance learning program offered through the district. Please consult with the case manager and building principal for options specific to their building.
Q: WHAT IF MY CHILD WAS REFERRED FOR AN EVALUATION BEFORE THE SCHOOL CLOSURE?
A: Evaluations and assessment practices that require in-person testing or observations that cannot be done remotely being postponed until school reopens. Your child’s evaluation will be scheduled once we are able to resume face to face contact with students.
Q: WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS RELATED SERVICES IN HIS/HER IEP?
A: Related services are currently being provided virtually through tele-therapy. These services include speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision and hearing services, and counseling. These services will be provided in person once regulations allow face to face interactions. Any missed sessions will be made up over the summer or into next school year.
